Players React to Boston - Washington trade

On January 28th the Boston Cannons shipped JonChristmas, Mike Levin and Ray Megill  to the Washington Bayhawks. The move wasin exchange for rising star Kevin Buchanan and three draft picks. The trade was actually centered around the players request to move closer to there jobs and homes.

“Theywere nice enough to work out a deal with me that I could come down hereand stay a little bit closer to home,” said former Boston defensemanRay Megill about the Cannon’s response to his request for a trade.

Megill, who spends his off-field hours as a project manager for a mechanicalcontract company is currently working out of the main office in Maryland.

“Theywere definitely looking out for my best interest”, said the 2007 Bostondraft pick, who was grateful for the Cannon’s cooperation.  Fellow Boston teammate Mike Levin can also relate to Megill’s situation.

Levin, who played nine games as goalie for the Cannons last season, was also granted a trade to benefit his personal life in which he just moved to Washington DC recently.

Levin believes that he was “just added to the mix.”Regardless, the Cannons showed respect for their players personal livesagain as Levin can now continue his MLL career at home as a Bayhawk.

As for Jon Christmas he is currently residing in the Philadelphia area and would have a shorter commute now with the Bayhawks.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 28th, 2010) –  The Bayhawks made their first major move of 2010 on Thursday by acquiring attackman John Christmas, defenseman Ray Megill and goalkeeper Mike Levin from the Boston Cannons in exchange for midfielder Kevin Buchanan and three draft picks, according to Bayhawks General Manager Spencer Ford.

“We have been looking for a right handed attackman who can do it all – feed, dodge, score,” said General Manager Spencer Ford.  “John Christmas is one of those players who is extremely complete and experienced, and will be a leader for this team. After losing Shawn Nadelen to what is believed to be a season ending injury, the addition of Ray Megill will add a defensive minded player who can contribute in all aspects of defense – a player who can play with a short stick, long stick, and control the entire defensive end of the field.  Mike Levin is a proven leader who has won a championship as a starting goalie and his team-first attitude will pay dividends on the back end of the field.”

Christmas was the Cannons 1st round pick (5th overall) in the 2005 Collegiate Draft.  He scored 68 goals and recorded 55 assists for the Cannons over 5 seasons, including career high 24 goals and 19 assists in 2007.  Megill was the Cannons 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2007 Collegiate Draft.  The defensemen appeared in 28 games over 3 seasons with the Cannons.  Levin spent one year with the Cannons and played 9 games in net in 2009 and recorded a 5-2 record.

The Bayhawks sent Kevin Buchanan and three draft picks to Boston. Buchanan, 23, played in 6 games last season for the Bayhawks, recording at least 1 point in each game.  He finished the 2009 Season with 7 goals and 6 assists.  Buchanan was the 5th overall pick in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft by Los Angeles.  He scored 8 goals and recorded 5 assists in the 2008 season.  Buchanan graduated from Ohio State University in 2008 and that season was named Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Year.  He recorded 175 points for the Buckeyes over 4 seasons.

“I want to thank Kevin for his contributions to this team,” said Ford. “His personality alone will make him a great asset to any team he plays for.”

The Bayhawks open their season on May 15th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when they take on the Long Island Lizards at 7 PM. Ticket information is available at www.washingtonbayhawks.com.

Seibald Coming to Philly???

Trade rumors seem to be swirling around that Boston Blazers 2009 1st round draft pick who may be heading to the city of brotherly love to play for the wings. Seibald, the first American taken in the ‘09 entry draft was selected 8th overall by the Boston Blazers. Seibald the former standout from Cornell was the recipient of the 2009 Tewaaraton award for the most outstanding college player in division 1,During the off season the Blazers knew that Seibald would be a hold out and made him inactive for the 2010 NLL season. The trade seems to be likely and should be announced later this week. The Wings would receive Max Seibald while sending the Boston Blazers an un confirmed amount of draft picks that could include a future 1st round pick as well. For a team that seems to be very inconsistent on offense, Seibald could bring them that spark that they are looking for. Stay tuned with the HerbFm crew as we get you more information during the week.

Wings vs Mammoth In-Game

Philadelphia, PA--  The Colorado Mammoth are in the City of Brotherly Love tonight for some great NLL action.  The Wings enter the game with a record of 1-1, while the Mammoth post a 1-2 record.  The Mammoth recently went through some front office changes as they decided to part ways with their coach.  Bob McMahon was relieved of his head coaching responsibilities after going 0-2.  Mammoth President and GM Steve Govett will be filling the role as of now.  The move has paid off as the Mammoth won their last game.  The Wings post a healthy line up of MLL and collegiate stars.  Brandon Miller will be in the goal tonight for the Wings.  He has been the staple of this team for a while.  The Wings have 20 goals for in two games, while the Mammoth have given up 30 goals.

The Topsy Turvy World of the NFL

What a crazy week in the NFL.  This statement seems to be true every weekend during the season.  However, for some reason, this season seems to be more confusing than the local corn maze.  If you were to tell me that the Bronco’s would be 6-0 after the summer they had, I would never have believed you.  At the same token, if you told me that the Titans would go 0-6, I would have called the looney bin and made sure you had the best room in the place.  This is the world of the NFL.  A league that isdesigned for every team to be .500 is anything but this year.  There are currently four undefeated teams right now.  The Giants could have stayed on thelist if they didn’t play undefeated New Orleans. Obviously in that game, something had to give.  The Saints, Colts, Broncos, and Vikings are all prefect to this point.  Out of these teams, Denver and Minnesota are the biggest surprises.

The Denver Broncos had the craziest off season in recent memory.  A brand new head coach comes intaking the place of one of the greatest of all time.  The team then trades away its franchise quarterback and has to deal with unrest from its top receiver.  These things usually do not lend themselves to perfection.  Minnesota added Percy Harvin and Brett Favre in the off season.  These two additions made it obvious that the Vikings would get better.  Not perfect. Brett Favre has never been on a 6-0 team.  There is a first for everything.  With Jared Allen and crew playing their minds out on defense and the best running back in the world on offense, the Vikings are running on all cylinders.  The question now is….Who will be the first to lose a game??

On the flip side of this we have teams at the bottom of the barrel.  The Rams and the Titans are still searching for their first win.  The Rams had a chance against the Redskins.  However, a team that relies on Kyle Boller as a backup deserves to not win a game.  The Titans situation is just perplexing.  There is no reason whatsoever to not have won a game.  This was a playoff team last year. They have some chances coming up with Jacksonville, Buffalo, Houston, St. Louis, and Seattle still on the schedule. I believe Vince Young will be the starter for the rest of season.  We will see how that one plays out.

There have been some crazy games this year as well.  In Week 1 the Steelers and the Titans go to OTand Seattle blanks St. Louis.  Week 2 Baltimore and NY Giants pull off wins.  Week 3 was the first game Detroit won in 20 games.  The Rams get shutout for the second time in Week4 along with Baltimoregetting screwed by the League.  Week 5 wasanother Washington loss to a winless team and Denver and Dallasneeding OT to win games.  Week 6 justmight be the icing on the cake thus far. Oakland beats Philly, Baltimoreloses on a last second field goal, Washingtonloses to another crappy team, and Buffalowins in OT.  What will Week 7 bring??

Maryland Play Calling Questionable In Win

College Park, MD-- The Terrapins were able to pull off the upset Satruday as they beat Clemson by 3 points.  The double digit underdogs did enough to hold on to a lead obtained before half time.  This game had the opportunity to be put away much earlier than the last meaningful play of the game.  Fridge continues his streak of questionable play calling.  As a season ticket holder for the last 5 years, I have seen my fair share of interesting plays.  The second half of this game, however, took the cake.  After getting great feild position on a Clemson turnover Maryland had a chance to add to the 3 point lead.  Instead of sticking to the pretty balanced offense that was making stride all day, Fridge went to the bag of tricks.  Torrey Smith got the ball on a WR screen with decent blocking in front of him.  Instead of running, he looks to pass the ball down field.  The play resulted in Smith getting tackled for a loss of 7 yards.  This pushed them out of field goal range and they could not recover the yards on the next 2 downs.

This was the first bone head call.  On a Terps possession in the 4th quarter, a nice run on 1st down by Chris Turner left them just shy of the first down.  Only needing less than a yard, Ralph calls two consecutive QB draws for no gain.  As time is running down on the play clock the Terps have to call a time out.  This is where you design the play and make sure everyone is on the same page.  Coming out of the timeout the players were so confused that the line did not get set until 5 seconds remained on the play clock.  The snap came off so fast without anyone really being set the Turner could not pick up the frist down.  There is no reason whatsoever that a team should be that disorganized after a time out.  This points to coaching, nothing else.

The last Clemson drive was typical 4th quarter Terps defense.  The scheme known as "Prevent" only really does one thing.  Prevevnts you from winning the game.  It only took a small handfull of plays for Clemson to start what looked like a comeback drive.  There Terps were defending against a big play.  However, the Tigers were rattling off first down after first down.  Luckily for Terps fans everywhere, a fumble on 3rd down stopped what could have been a game tying drive.

Anyone that watches the Terps enough probably has the same frustration.  Fridge is starting to wear on his welcome.  The problem is, Fridge is one of the best coaches we have had in a long time.  This program could do better.  There has to be a way to go after Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, or any number of other coaches that are out there.

With getting the win today the Terps improve to 2-3 on the year.  They will travel to Wake Forest next weekend.  Here's hoping to another upset win.

Local Football Coaches on the Hot Seat

It has been a frustrating season for Terps and Redskins fans.  Both the Fridge and Jim Zorn are entering must win weeks.  However, I believe the damage has been done.  The Terrapins (1-3) find themselves with their backs against a very big wall, while the Redskins (1-2) have a little bit of breathing room.

Maryland Terrapins

The Terps have started much slower than expected.  The loss to Cal can be forgiven considering that they are a top 25 team.  I am sure more people expected the game to be closer, the fans need to be more realistic about the chances of beating the Golden Bears.  This game is not the issue.  The next 3 games however, slam a steak into the heart of Terps fans.  Chris Turner and the rest of the offense has a hard time getting going against James Madison.  Nothing against JMU, but this game should not have gone into OT.  JMU has played at a high level for the last few year and won a National Title, but to think that they could beat the Terps never crossed my mind.  The Maryland Defense has always had a hard time stopping an option offense or a running quarterback.  This was the case against JMU who cycled quarterbacks the whole game.  Following a scary win against JMU the Terps hosted Middle Tennessee State.  This is a team that the Terps lost to on the road last year and shocked everyone.  I figured that on our home field and remember that loss last year would be enough to push Turner and crew past MTSU.  We all thought wrong.  Another loss in the final minutes of the game.  It was with a 1-2 record that Maryland hosted the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers.  Rutgers has been a great program the last few years, but seem to find themselves in a rebuilding year.  This game should have been a lot closer and with a Maryland win.  However, a pick-6 on the games first offensive play had the Terps playing from behind almost the whole game.  Rutgers wanted that game more.  They seemed more spirited and excited about playing in front of a depleted Maryland crowd.

That moves us to this upcoming weekend.  Clemson will be visiting College Park this Saturday for a Noon kick off.  This may be one of three games Maryland has a chance of winning over the remaining schedule.  Clemson always plays the Terps tough.  For some reason they enjoy playing Maryland and get up for that game.  Alex Wujciak and Andrew Moten will need to get the defense back on track.  Clemson holds an edge on the Terps in the all time series 30-25-2.  However, the last time Clemson came to town, they routed UMD 30-17.  The remaining schedule includes: Wake Forest, Virginia, Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Boston College.  I have the Terps as 3 - 9 when it is all said and done.  I hope that I am wrong.  If I am correct, The Fridge needs to go.

Washington Redskins

Being a die hard Eagles fan, I am some what enjoying the recent down fall of the Skins.  However, I do like the NFC East being known as the best division in football and the Skins are hurting that legacy.  Jim Zorn was originally hired as the offensive coordinator then immediately promoted to head coach.  This move seemed to work out great at the beginning of the season last year when the Skins went 6-2.  However, since then, the Skin have been 3-8 since then.  The most significant loss came last week again the 0-19 Detroit Lions.  Now, lucky for Zorn, they face the Bucs, Panther and Chiefs before they start the division schedule.  For Zorn to keep his job, he will need to win all three of these games.  That will bring them to 4-2 going into a tough stretch of games.  October 26th will mark the stretch of tough games for the Skins.  The Eagles will be in town followed by Falcons, Broncos, Cowboys, Eagles again, and the Saints.  There is a good chance that the Skins are 4-7 after this stretch.  The remaining schedule is Oakland, Giants, Dallas, and San Diego.  The season outlook at this point is 5-10.

The biggest reason for this seems to come in age.  Clinton Portis, Antwaan Randle El, Santana Moss, and others arent necessarily in the prime of their careers.  Jason Campbell has not flourished the way people expected under Jim Zorn.  Add that to the bust of Albert Haynesworth, who came to the Skins out of shape.  He has not lived up to the hype, which I knew he wouldn't.  Haynesworth suffers from Andruw Jones disease.   Get the money and stop caring.

The outcome of each of these seasons could and should see coaching changes at both teams.  Let's hope that both can turn it around and prove me wrong.

Inside Lacrosse Ranks Top Lax Towns

I respect the work that Inside Lacrosse does for the sport.  They have good coverage of the premier events.  But this time, they flat out got it wrong.  On September 17th I noticed that they came out with the Top 10 Lacrosse Towns.  The list included all the areas I would have expected, however, it was the order I have issue with.  Denver was ranked #1.  That is not a typo.  Denver is #1.  They broke it down into categories then gave ratings accordingly.  They looked at the following areas to come up with a grade: Pro Game, College, High School, Youth, and Potential.  These are great categories to look at when trying to distinguish the best lax town.  However, these areas should be weighted accordingly.  The system in weighted order should be College, HS, Youth, Potential, and Pro.  The Pro game should definitely carry the lowest weight of them all.  This is how they rated the game.  They then broke down the life.  With areas such as Scene, Marquee Events, Facilities, and Names used to rank.  These categories are harder to substantiate.

Let’s take a look at the comparison between Denver and Baltimore.

Pro Rating: Den 99  Bmore 75

College: Den 90       Bmore 97

HS: Den 94               Bmore 99

Youth: Den 96         Bmore 97

Potential: Den 99     Bmore 85

Scene: Den 99          Bmore 97

Events: Den 92        Bmore 99

Facilities: Den 100  Bmore 95

Names: Den 92       Bmore 98

So now that you can see the break down it makes it easier to see where they just plain got it wrong.  Starting at the top, the Pro Rating is dead on.  I will not argue with that.  The Outlaws and the Mammoth draw insane attendance.  The Bayhawks keep moving venues making it hard to sustain a following.  The Thunder drew great crowds when they were around.  The College Rating is where the issues begin.  There hasn’t been a college from the Denver area represented in a championship game in NCAA history.  Baltimore area schools have been represented in 30 D1 championships winning 11 of them.  Division 2 schools have been in 5 championships and D3 schools 19 championship games.  Those numbers speak for themselves.

Moving on to the HS level, the 99 rating is spot on for Baltimore.  But to give Denver a 94 is insane.  Just think about the schedules the Balmer teams have to play.  Boy’s Latin, Calvert Hall, Gilmen, Loyola, Fallston, DeMatha, St. Mary’s, and the list continues on.  I would love to see any high school from the Denver area keep up with a Maryland team.  In fact I would be as bold to say that the JV team at most MD schools would wreck the Denver area all star team.  The Youth rating falls under the same type of scrutiny.  There are a lot of Balmer area teams that travel to other states and post great showings in those tournaments.  In MD, most kids walk around and sleep with their stick.  It’s a way of life.

Now the potential is another are I have no issues with.  Denver really is up can coming.  Balmer is at the top.  The biggest way to grow is to find a way to develop the following for the Bayhawks.  But, why see the Hawks when you are used to UMD vs Hopkins, Towson vs UMBC, and Calvert Hall vs Loyola.  The next area I have more issues with.  The Lacrosse Scene rankings are ridiculous.  Visit any park in the spring and what are you going to see…Lax sticks EVERYWHERE.  Kids in this area live, eat, breath, sleep the game of Lax. I am sure there are plenty of people in Denver that do not even know what a lacrosse stick is, let alone own one.  Between my brother and I we own about 7.

Now, the facilities ranking.  This one I cannot comment on because I haven’t been out to Denver to take a look to see what they have.  However, lets look at where out hometown team play.  Byrd Stadium, Homewood Field, M&T Bank, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial and many other places.  Through the interviews we have conducted, Navy continues to be the favorite of the players.  Take that into consideration.

Finally, my biggest gripe, the Names ranking.  I challenge anyone to compile a list of the players born in MD or played in MD and compare it to Denver.  IL listed Tierney as a name.  He coached at Princeton for a number of years.  He is not from Denver.  They listed players that are from NY or played at UMD.  Again, they are not affiliated with Denver besides the Outlaws or Mammoth.  Which means they are in Denver long enough to play a home game.

Balmer area fans should be on notice.  It’s not Denver we need to worry about, its Long Island.  The NY area is moving up the list on the talent and teams they produce.  It is great to know that the game is expanding the way it is.  However, if you are going to produce a list like this, get it right.

MLL Championship: Toronto Nationals vs Denver Outlaws

Annapolis, MD-- The HerbFM crew is once again at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the 2009 New Balance MLL Championship.  We had a chance to speak to Jeff Sonke of the Denver Outlaws before the game.  He told us that he believes that the Denver offense is much faster than the Nationals.  We will keep an eye on him throughout the game.  Kyle Harrison also told us that his hamstring is feeling 100%, but is still taped for precaution.  Brett Queener did some warm up, but is still sidelined with a broken hand.  We did not see any tape or support on his hands during the warm up.  According to a source close to the Nationals, Geoff Snider keeps his stick heads in the ice cooler to keep them legal.
