Delaware vs Johns Hopkins In Game

Baltimore, MD -- The Blue Hens have made their second trip to the Baltimore area in four days.  The last time they came to Charm City, they defeated #14 ranked UMBC.  Today, they will try to derail #5 Johns Hopkins.  Its a cold and windy day at Homewood this evening.  Hopkins leads the all time series 6-0.  The last game between these two teams was the 2007 NCAA Semi Finals, where the Blue Jays won 8-3.  Today we will be keeping our eye on Delaware's Curtis Dickson and JHU's Micheal Kimmel.

Hopkins wins the opening face-off of the game.

14:38 - JHU Goal - Michael Kimmel from Chris Lightner.  1-0 JHU
Lightner is a freshman starter from Calvert Hall.

Delaware is continuing to play 4 long poles on defense.  A strategy that worked pretty well against UMBC.

8:52 - JHU Goal - Kyle Wharton scores unassisted.  His first of the year.  2-0 JHU

6:31 - Things are getting a little feisty.  Tempers are flaring fighting over the ground ball.  We are seeing a lot of early mistakes from both teams.  This is what happens when you spend 2 weeks practicing in a gym.

4:37 - Del Goal - Curtis Dickson from Pat Lombard.  2-1 JHU.  Sam DeVore from JHU fell on the play, opening up the lane for Dickson.  This was Dickson's 12th straight game with a goal.

4:02 - Del Goal - Martin Cahill from Kevin Kaminski.  2 All.

2:37 - JHU Goal - Wharton (2) from Tom Palasek.  3-2 JHU.  The Delaware defense was a bit too aggressive and over played the ball.  Hopkins showed the ball movement we are used to seeing to get that goal.

1:44 - JHU Goal - Kimmel (2) from Steven Boyle.  4-2 JHU.  It looks to us that Hopkins has figured out this 4 pole defense.

Against UMBC, the Blue Hens were playing 3 poles high in box and one back.  Today, they are playing one high and 3 back.  We will see if Coach Shillinglaw makes any changes to the D as the game goes on.

At the end of the 1st Quater, Johns Hopkins 4, Delaware 2.

Here are some 1st Quarter stats:  Face-off 5-2 in favor of JHU.  Shots JHU 8, Del 9.

13:53 - Del Goal - Kaminski scores unassisted.  4-3 JHU

12:58 - JHU Goal - Kimmel (3) scores unassisted.  5-3 JHU.  Kimmel once again scoring off a roll dodge to the right side.  Delaware playing a tight man defense.  However, Hopkins' ball movement is really quick.

Bartram Scouting Report Note: Kimmel goes to the right on most goals and shoots to the upper portions of the net.

9:40 - JHU Goal - Zach Palmer from Wharton.  6-3 JHU.  Palmer is another freshman on this Blue Jay's squad who is seeing a lot of playing time.

Bartram Scouting Report Note: Dickson is not quite fast enough to turn the corner on the JHU Defense.

6:53 - Del Goal - John Austin from Phil Rollins. It was a text book give and go play.  6-4 JHU

Side Note:  Del #56 Dan Cooney is taking most of the face-offs today in place of Tommy Lee.  He drives straight to the goal when he wins a face-off.

Scores:  Bryant 5, Army 4 in the 3rd.  UVA beats Mount St Mary's 15-5.

3:10 - JHU Goal - Steven Boyle scores from Kimmel on the diving Superman goal.  7-4 JHU
Boyle made a great move from the X, taking it to the right side and diving  forward in the crease.

Delaware has dominated the time of possession, however, they keep making mistakes that Hopkins has been able to capitalize on.  Steven Boyle has been doing a great job of directing traffic on offense.  He has been staying at the X and getting a great look at the Delaware defense.

End of the 1st Half - JHU 7 Delaware 4.  Get yourself a sandwich and join us in 15mins for the 3rd quarter of action.

Here are some first half stats: Shots: Del 26 JHU 15.  Ground Balls: Del 12 JHU 14.  Face Offs: Del 6 JHU 7.  Saves: Del 1 JHU 6.  Turnovers: Del 7 JHU 8.

Bartram Scouting Report:  Delaware  won 2 face-offs with Tommy Lee.  They replaced him with Cooney and have won 4 of 6 since.

Final Score Update Bryant beats Army 7-6.

Tommy Lee start the second half with the face off win.  However, he just limped off the field.

13:12 - JHU Goal - Max Chawtin from Kimmel (2).  8-4 JHU

Cooney back in on the Face-Off for Del and gets the win.  Hopkins playing a zone defense.

Coach Pietramala just gave the official a piece of his mind.  If you arent familiar with this.  Lets just say I would never want to get on Coach's bad side.

9:56 - JHU Goal - Boyle (2) scores unassisted on a nice turnaround move.  9-4 JHU

8:20 - Gvozden makes a split  save.  Very impressive

8:02 - JHU Goal - Wharton(3) from Kimmel(3).  Kimmel has a career high in points.  10-4 JHU.

Delaware is 0 for 5 on shots in the second half.

3:48 - Del Goal - Cahill (2) from Nick Elsmo.  Nice submarine shot from Cahill.  That was Cahill's 8th goal of the year.  10 - 5 JHU

At the end of the 3rd, JHU 10, Delaware 5.

Cooney is back out for the face-off.  It looks like Shillinglaw is content to rotate FOGO players.

Hopkins wins the face off and tries to hurry the offense.  When the initial drive didn't result in a shot, they slowed it down.

10:44 - JHU EMO Goal - Boyle (3) from Kimmel (4) on a great ball movement goal.  11 - 5 JHU

8:57 - JHU Goal - John Ranagan scores his first goal of his career on a nice roll dodge, switching from right to left hand. 12 - 5 JHU

7:33 - JHU Goal - Palmer (2) scores unassisted.  He wanted this goal from the minute he got the ball.  He dodged two players and added the fake on the crease to get the score.  13 - 5 JHU

6:29 - JHU Goal - Wharton (4) scores unassisted.  New Goalie in for Delaware.  15 - 5 JHU

6:21 - JHU Goal - Boyle (4) from Eric DiProspero.  Original Goalie back in for Delaware.  16 - 5 JHU.

5:40 - Del Goal - Cahill (3) scores unassisted.  This is his 12th career hat trick.  16 - 6 JHU

3:40 - Del Penalty - Slashing.  Hopkins goes on the EMO

2:41 - JHU Penalty - Personal foul.  Del on the EMO

1:43 - A broken stick and a penalty called on Del for slashing.  5 on 5 play.

:27 - Del Goal - Cahill (4) from Eric Smith.  EMO Goal.  Too little, too late.  Cahill ties a career high in goals.  15 - 7 JHU

GAME OVER.  Hopkins wins 15 - 7.  Make sure you tune in to The Penalty Box this weekend for interviews and comments on this game.
