Bayhawks Rookies Shine Despite Loss

Annapolis, MD --The Washington Bayhawks (3-6) lost a close game Saturday night to the Denver Outlaws (7-2) by the score of 11-8 at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium. The Bayhawks defense played the best it has played all season by allowing only 1 goal in the first half. The Bayhawks lead at halftime by the score of 3-1. Both goalies on each team played an outstanding game. Jesse Schwartzman of the Denver Outlaws stopped 22 of 29 shots on goal while the Bayhawks own Chris Garrity stopped 16 of 27 shots on goal. The difference in the game came in the fourth quarter when the Denver defense came up huge by not giving up any goals. This was the first time all season that Washington was held scoreless in any quarter for 2009.

Despite the loss a pair of rookies shined in the game with Jeff Reynolds and Ben Hunt of the Bayhawks scoring goals. Reynolds scored his first 2 goals of his MLL career. Ben Hunt continued his streak of three straight games with a goal. Johns Hopkins alumni Brian Christopher scored his first MLL goal in the third quarter for the Denver Outlaws in front of a home town crowd.

The Bayhawks will return to action next Saturday, July 25th when they travel to Chicago. This game will be the Bayhawks second road game against the Machine but the first this season in Chicago. The Bayhawks beat the Machine in their first meeting  by a score of 16-14. This is a must win game for the Bayhawks because as it stands with a Bayhawks loss and a Long Island win Washington will be eliminated from playoff contention.
